Information about Prague
The capital city of Czech Republic is our most valuable urban area. In 1992 the historic centre of the city was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register.

The city of Prague has approximately 1.100.000 inhabitants and covers the area of 500 square kilometers in an altitude of 235 meters above the sea level. Its foundation dates back to the period of the construction of the Prague Castle in 9th century.
Prague is divided into 10 main districts:
Prague 1 is the most central part of the city, consists of the Old Town ( Stare Město ), Lesser Town ( Mala Strana ) and medieval Jewish neighbourhood Josefov. You can find here Prague Castle ( Hradcany ), Strahov Monastery, Nerudova Street, Kampa Park, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Jewish museum and Synagogues.
Prague 1 is also the place where shops, teathres, galleries, restaurants, pubs and diferent kind of clubs are located.You can find here also quiet places at the embankment of river Vltava and in the narrow streets of Old city.
Prague 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10 are residential parts of the city.
In Prague 6 most of the govermental buildings are situated. Also, Prague Airport is in the west corner of Prague 6.
Prague 7 was a main industrial part of Prague. Today Prague 7 becomes a modern office and business center.
Prague 4, 8 and 9 are large apartment buildings areas.
Prague represents a unique collection of historical monuments, on the very top of Prague you can see Prague Castle, which you can see almost from every part of Prague. You can see most of the architectural styles represented on the Prague Castle as it was being built through centuries. The historical part of the city is situated on both banks of the river Vltava and consists of 6 parts - formerly independent urban units unified in the 18th century. They are as follows: Stare Mesto (Old Town), Josefov (the remaining part of the former Jewish Town - today a part of the Old Town), Nove Mesto (New Town), Mala Strana (Lesser Town), Hradcany and Vysehrad. Most of the historical monuments, museums and galleries are concentrated in this part of the city.

History of Prague
around 870 - establishment of Prague castle
around 926 - establishment of St. Vitus Rotunda at Prague Castle
10th century - Vysehrad castle was established on the opposite bank of the Vltava river
973 - bishopric established
1085 - Prague becomes a royal town - the seat of the first Czech king Vratislav I
1172 - completion of the second stone bridge in Europe - Judith's Bridge
1344 - Prague bishopric promoted to archbishopric and the construction of St. Vitu's cathedral starts (completed in 1929)
1348 - the New Town and the first university in Central Europe (Charles University) were founded
1620 – battle at Bila Hora, Czech nobility was defeated and Austrian Habsburks became the head of Czech
1918 - independent state of Czechoslovak Republic with Prague as a capital city
1939-1945 - occupation by the Nazi Germany
1948 - the Communist Party comes to power after the February coup
1989 - Velvet Revolution
1993 - division of federation , establishment of independent Czech Republic with Prague as a capital city
